Muslim Educational Association of Southern India 

The Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI), formerly Madras Executive Committee of Mohamedan Educational Conference and Mohamedan Educational Association of Southern India, is a trust which strives for education among Muslim youth, especially from South India.









HISTORY OF MEASI

Establishment

The Association, established in 1902 by Muslims, was registered under the societies act XXI of 1860. It was founded as a fulfillment of the dream of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan after the annual session of Muslim Education Conference held in Madras on 28 December 1901. 

This conference renamed the then existing Madras Executive Committee of Mohamedan Educational Conference as the Mohamedan Educational Association of Southern India, which later came to be known as Muslim Educational Association of Southern India.

The Association is one of the oldest minority educational institutions and is having a multi-level educational system ranging from school to Post Graduate and Research, covering several fields of studies with a sound financial resource-base. The Association is backed by a democratic, participative management system and is under the leadership of individuals drawn from educational, industrial and other walks of life.


The trust manages The New College in the city of Chennai along with MEASI Matriculation Higher Secondary School, New College Institute of Management, MEASI Academy of Architecture, Institute of Research in Soil Biology & Bio-Technology, MEASI Urdu Academy and MEASI Institute of Information Technology, MEASI C.A. Academy.

Leadership

By 1930, the organisation came under the control of Muslims. However, the present board of trustees includes Muslims from different background.

NEW COLLEGE

Founded in 1951 by the Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI) The New College is one of the leading autonomous institutions of higher education offering instruction in 19 courses in Humanities, Science and Commerce at the undergraduate level and 12 courses at the postgraduate level. Though primarily established for providing higher education to Muslim students, its doors are open to deserving students from all communities. This institution is committed to imparting quality higher education with an emphasis on equipping the students with the desired knowledge and skills to meet the global challenges

"Established in 1951, The New College is sponsored by the Muslim Educational Association of Southern India, a premier institution which has been endeavouring, since 1902, to lift the members of the community out of their educational backwardness and give them the benefit of higher education.


The New College has progressively developed into one of the leading institutions of higher education offering instruction in 23 courses in Humanities, Science and Commerce at the Under graduate level and 15 courses at the Postgraduate level.


The College has on its rolls about 2200 students in the Day College and about 2800 students in the Evening College .Though primarily established for providing higher education to Muslim students,its doors are open to deserving students from other communities.Deeniyat classes are conducted during college hours for muslim students and moral instruction classes for others with a view to inculcate moral and cultural values in them.


The college celebrated its silver jubilee in March 1978. The centenary celebrations of the MEASI and the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the College were held in January 2002 and the latter concluded in March 2002.


To mark the successful completion of 50 years in the field of Education and Community Development, the parent body MESAI has constructed a multi crore complex to accommodate all Post Graduate courses in Computer Science and Information Technology.

This new building is provided with the latest electronic equipment and the relevant infrastructure.


The College was Re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) IN September 2010 and placed at A Grade.Besides, the college was accorded autonomous status by the U.G.C. in 2006-07 and thus the college became autonomous from the academic year 2007-08.


The various courses introduced in the college will give an insight into the sustained and zealous efforts of the successive office bearers of the Association and its well-wishers in the cause of higher education and also the great-strides made by the institution since its inception.


An Islamic Study Center attached to the college seeks to cherish spiritual values of life and imparts formal teaching in religion to Muslim students during college hours. Thre is a mosque attached to the college where prayers are conducted five times a day.


Under co-curricular activities, we have in addition to the College Union and other Sectional Associations, facilities for training in National Cadet Corps., Sports and Games and National Service Scheme. The wholesome benefits of residential academic life are accessible to every inmate of the New College Hostel.

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
In 1983 the general body of MEASI proposed to start a school in north madras area. 

The MEASI matriculation higher secondary school opened on 1st July 1985.
Classes for L.K.G/U.K.G along with classes I to V were declared open. The first year of its existence saw only 35 students and 5 staff members with Mrs.Fazal Fathima as principal In-charge. From 35 students to 1500 students the school has come a long way with a history unique in its own way.
The school was served by the respective managing committee of three year term each. It's worth mentioning the untiring and laudable efforts of janab late T.Abdul Wahid Sahib and janab A.J. Abdul Razack Sahib, who were instrumental in bringing the school into existence.
The role of Dr.Syed Khaleefathullah and janab H. M.Shamsuden in taking the school to remarkable heights of recognition and achievements cannot be described in a few words. Their efforts deserve all appreciation and achievements.


THE SCHOOL WAS STARTED ON 1st JULY 1985 WITH AN AGGREGATE STRENGTH OF 35 CHILDREN ON THE ROLL IN CLASSES L.K.G. TO STD V IT HAS GROW IN STRENGTH AND MAINTAINS A HIGH STANDARD OF EDUCATION. NOW THE SCHOOL HAS A STRENGTH OF NEARLY 1500 PUPILS ON ITS ROLL. 1987&1988 ARE MEMORABLE YEAR BECAUSE THE SCHOOL ATTAINED THE STATURE OF MATRICULATION AND HIGHER SECONDARY,RESPECTIVELY, WITH THE SINCERE EFFORTS OF THE MANAGING COMMITTEE

THE SCHOOL TRAINS THE PUPILS FOR THE TEN-YEAR MATRICULATION EXAMINATION AND FOR THE TWO YEAR HIGHER SECONDARY EXAMINATION BOTH OF WHICH ARE CONDUCTED BY THE DIRECTORATE OF GOVERNMENT, TAMILNADU.
THE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION IN BOTH MATRICULATION AND HIGHER SECONDARY COURSES IS ENGLISH.

THE INSTITUTION NOW HAS A TWO STOREYED MAIN BLOCK, THREE STOREYED ADMINISTRATION BLOCK. A SEPARATE THREE STOREYED BLOCK FOR KINDERGARTEN, PRIMARY SECTION AND GIRLS OF CLASSES VI TO XII AND A MAGNIFICENT AUDITORIUM. THE CLASS ROOMS HAS SEPARATE LABORATORIES FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE, PHYSICS,CHEMISTRY, BOTANY & ZOOLOGY. THE LABORATORIES ARE WELL EQUIPPED WITH MODERN SCIENTIFIC EQUIPMENTS AND APPARATUS TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE SYLLABUS.

TO INCULCATE READING HABIT AMONG CHILDREN THE SCHOOL HAS A WELL SET LIBRARY WITH SUFFICIENT READING MATERIAL.

IN THE CURRICULUM,LANGUAGES LIKE TAMIL,HINDI,AND ARABIC ARE TAUGHT IN ADDITION TO ENGLISH WHICH IS THE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION. MORAL INSTRUCTION IS GIVEN TO ALL STUDENTS. RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION(ISLAMIC) IN ENGLISH AND DEENYATH CLASSES FOR MUSLIM CHILDREN IN PARTICULAR FIND A PLACE IN REGULAR TIME-TABLE AND PUPILS ARE TO WRITE TESTS AND EXAMINED IN THE SUBJECT.

THIS HELPS IN CHARACTER FORMATION. FACILITY IS ALSO GIVEN TO THE PUPILS TO LEARN A THIRD LANGUAGE(ARABIC)FROM STD.III TO VIII. COMPUTER INVOLVING PARCTICALS IS IMPARTED TO STUDENTS FROM STDs. I TO XII (EXCEPT GROUP III AND IV WITH COMPUTER SCIENCE IN PART III SUBJECTS OF STDs XI & XII).ZOHR CONGREGATION IS COMPULSORY FOR ALL MUSLIM PUPILS.
